Bone chilling... Carvers in the snow
Bone chilling...

February Diary Entry:

We drove north into Michigan and saw some deep snow and long icicles! There were days that proved to be bone chilling, with temperatures dropping way below freezing and everything liquid in our van turning to a solid block. However our hearts were warmed by the great friendship of the people we met and with whom we shared many great meals in some lovely restaurants! We enjoyed coffee in a quaint shop in Marshall and flet like we were in England as we ate at ‘Shulers’ with our friends the Trammels. As we drove closer to Lake Michigan the snow got deeper and the icicles reached from the roof to the ground!

De-icing the Plane
De-icing the plane

After only a week we went down into Indiana where the weather remained just as cold! We drove on into Indianapolis where we were to leave our car and catch a plane to Houston, Texas for Brother Kilgore's Missions service. Sure enough, the day we were to fly, there was a blizzard and as we watched them de-icing the plane we got the news that the plane would not be going because the windshield had cracked! We spent all day at the airport being re-routed first to Cleveland, Ohio and then Detroit, Michigan, in the hopes of getting to Houston via these places. Each time the trip was cancelled due to the weather. That evening we resigned ourselves to staying overnight and catching a very early flight to Houston next morning.

We were happy to find ourselves in Houston in warmer temperatures and a shining blue sunny day! We had wonderful services at Life Tabernacle where we spoke at length on our early years in Papua New Guinea, showing pictures we had taken all those years ago and many of them we had not looked ourselves in many years! We met many fine people and renewed some old acquaintences from many years ago. We spent time with the Kilgore family at Galverston; a highlight being to eat at a great Aquarium restaurant which has a huge glass aquarium with ALL kinds of sea creatures swimming around! These events are such memorable times for us on our travels this year!

Catching up with old friends from 1985

We returned to Indianapolis by plane and drove into southern Indiana where the weather was not as severe. We spent five days with our friends the Brewers, enjoying a visit to a tea room, a lovely family meal in their house, a great church service, a meal at the well known Haubs Steakhouse restaurant (a converted grain storage barn) and a relaxing time in their church apartment.
