January Diary Entry:

Christmas and New Year was spent with our dear friends the Larry Blakes and their fine family and church family in O’ Fallon, Illinois. We more than enjoyed the great Christmas production directed by their son Jonathan and wife Angie. The New Years service inspired us all with a greater commitment.

All too quickly this great time was over and we were back on the road travelling this month in Illinois. The weather had remained cold but without snow, but before the month was out we were to experience freezing weather and snow!

As usual Illinois was a great place to visit the churches and we met many old aquaintances and made many new ones! The church in Belleville (Brother Scabolzi’s) kindly gave us a linen shower, enabling us to take new linens back to the field. We enjoyed some good meals at 'The Hideout’ (a restaurant with a portrayal of former gangsters) with the Glasco’s in Marion. We were in Amish country and visited one of their country barns while in Villa Grove with the Conners.

We were able to stay a week in the church apartment in Effingham and had some great times with the Upchurchs’ and our dear friends the Jenkins (read my story of The Dinner Set as Sister Jenkins had a part in this). During this time we did get some snow, although it was not a lot.

Towards the end of January we travelled onto Ohio where the weather got much colder and we began to see much more snow. We began on the west side of Ohio, went south towards Cinncinati and then drove north towards Cleveland. These were very cold days, made worse by the strong wind which was chilling to the bones!

We made our way back, along snowy freeways, to Columbus where we were to fly out to California for a Missions conference with Richard and Nancy Grandquist. As we left the airport our plane spent some time de-icing before take off.

What a joy to see sunny California! It was so wonderful to spend these next 4 days with great people and good friends. We were inspired at the Rock Church, to see the Asian church, hear the great singing and challenge the church with a missionary vision even larger than what they have!

Friends from many years ago, the Rays toured us around from San Francisco down to Monterary Bay, Cannery Row, Pebble Beach and Carmel. We saw many wonderful views and our hearts leapt to see Gum trees and even Wattle trees in flower!
