Travel Diary for June & July: Since last writing we have traveled in so many places, including Georgia, Tennessee, and then travelling from these southern States up into West Virginia and Maryland. It is summer time and very hot in some of the places we have been. We have enjoyed meeting old friends in many places. While in West Virginia we had the opportunity to stay with friends for a few days, driving over five mountain ranges, the highest being over 3,000 feet. The scenery was beautiful, the area quiet and peaceful and we seemed a long way from the world and the rigors of travel! We also had the chance to stay with our son-in-law's parents in Maryland and enjoyed this time as well. The traffic around Washington DC was so busy and we were glad to come south into North and South Carolina. We drove right down to the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina and had the chance to go to church on one of the small islands off the coast. The weather was hot and humid there! The rest of the week in South Carolina was also spent with friends and we had some memorable times as well as being in church services with them. We had a very special church service in this State, where we felt the Lord was answering prayers and burdens we had all been carrying, both in the local church in which we were in at the time and also for our overseas responsibilities. We all knew it was a visitation from the Lord and since that time we have seen many answered prayers!
From South Carolina we made our way across to Kentucky. This is a beautiful state with many things to see if one had the time! We actually had a couple of free days so we went to stay at Bardstown, a quaint town south of Louisville. We were able to attend the outdoor musical of the Stephen Foster story (this man wrote so many of the early well known American songs we all know and love, such as ‘I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair’, ‘Oh Susanna’, ‘Camptown races’ and many others). This was very enjoyable and we learnt a lot of American history also! We visited the grand country home his uncle owned and from which it is assumed he wrote the well known song ‘My Old Kentucky home’.
Ohio was our next state and after one week in and around Columbus, we drove to Missouri. We were able to spend the weekend with the fine pastor and wife and some of the building team members who built the Bible College building for us in Papua New Guinea. How we appreciate the sacrificial spirit of these folk and it was good to be with them in church. That same week we were able to meet up with our fellow missionaries, Peter and Robyn Gration and family who have just arrived in the USA to raise their monies for the mission field of Papua New Guinea. Our journey will be coming to an end in the next few months, but we are yet to travel many miles. Richard and Margaret Carver
