November travels

From New Mexico we drove down through El Paso into West Texas, stopping at various rest areas along the interstate as they often had a historical plaque telling of the days when the pioneers met Indian tribes. In times past, hostile Apaches waited in ambush in the walls of a narrow passage of the Rio Grande and travellers had to organise into caravans in the hope of passing safely. The scenery was stark but beautiful and the size of the cactus interested us. West Texas near Odessa was simply mile after mile of oil pumps, sometimes as far as the eye could see.

After a great Sunday with services in two churches in Odessa we moved on to Oklahoma. For the next three weeks we visited churches near Oklahoma City, except for one weekend we travelled to Tulsa for Sunday services. We were able to base in a local church apartment which made life easier over these few weeks. We were interested in some rock formations after visiting a church called ‘Rose Rock’. When we enquired about the name of the church, we were shown the unusual “rose rock” formations found only in that area of Oklahoma. We went to visit a small museum that displayed the rock, as well as other Indian memorabilia.

We had many meals with pastors, friends and missionaries, renewing some friendships of twenty years ago. However the time always comes for us to move on and next it was to Louisiana. We spent a week in the north west corner visiting churches as well as some pretty locations such as Caddo Lake. Here the cypress trees grow in the water and spanish moss hangs from the trees giving an ethereal feel to the small winding roads that lead along the lake.

We have been fortunate to use the E.L. Freeman Memorial house (dedicated to the missionaries, Bro and Sis Freeman who spent 40 plus years in Africa) on the church Headquarters and Campgrounds for a number of weeks in November. From here we are able to travel to various churches. Being in the southern states has not allowed us to feel the real bite of winter yet and there are some days when it feels like summer. However the night can be cold and we have pulled out our winter coats anticipating colder days ahead.
