Southern Region Conference 2005
Bro. Jacobsen (General Board member, UPC of Australia, and pastor in Townsville, Australia), was the guest speaker at the Southern Region Conference, held in Port Moresby in March 2005.
He writes:
“18-20 MARCH 2005: From 300 - 400 were at each meeting of the Pt Moresby Regional Conference held at the Erima church. A righteous intensity was evident from the start as all worshipped God, reaching out for whatever he had for them.”
“After the first evening service we looked forward to the first morning service but were surprised to find few at the church. The Home Missions Director, Pastor John Ulka and I were waiting for a minister from the local church to arrive when one of the members advised us that a senior pastor, Pastor Nick Gende, had been attacked the previous night. We went to his home where we heard how he and another brother had dropped some members off at their home in a settlement (a risky task because of robbers) where the men were attacked when leaving the settlement.”
“Three attackers had bush knives (machetes) and a home made gun with which they pistol whipped the men taking the little money they had on them. Both had several head wounds which were treated at the hospital. It was the fourth attack on Pastor Gende who will not be deterred from giving the saints a lift into the dangerous settlements where they live. A rascal (criminal) was shot dead a short distance from the church the same evening. Thank God for those dedicated preachers who, because of their faithfulness, serve the Lord and his people despite adversity.”
“The altar was filled at the evening service that night when only those who had never received the Holy Ghost were invited to come. With little encouragement needed the seekers cried out to God and wept for a great length of time; sixty six being filled including many children who had been weeping and worshipping God even before the altar service started. The last evening a further twenty six were filled.”
