National Ladies Conference & Southern Region Seminar

Welcome PNG style
Sis Jacobsen being welcomed PNG style

October 2005
Goroka & Port Moresby, PNG

Report by Bro Dennis Jacobsen, Pastor: UPC Townsville, Australia

There is an unrivaled friendliness between the nations of Papua New Guinea and Australia. Both countries have been closely entwined for political and economic reasons. Besides sharing a common border, the people of both nations stood strongly together to expel a cruel enemy over fifty years ago. Against the odds my father, being a wireless/air gunner, survived that war but two uncles died in it, one being buried in a war cemetery outside of Port Moresby, the capitol city. My father shared many stories and photos of his war, the land and the people. Likewise, my father-in-law often spoke of his war in the steamy tropical jungles.

The church I attended during my youth supported a missionary to Papua New Guinea so I saw numerous promotions that featured hours of film and many 35mm slides of the missionary’s work there. Those promotions were always a highlight of the church calendar.

Obviously, what I heard over the years left something in my heart as I always look forward to visiting this fascinating country, meet its friendly people and, above all, preach God’s life changing word.

Guest Speakers
Bro & Sis Gration, Sis Thecla (Ladies President), Sis Jacobsen & Sis Shields

Sister Jacobsen with Sister Carol Shields ministered to approximately 800 ladies at the National Ladies Conference of the United Pentecostal Assemblies of PNG during October held in the highlands town of Goroka. As I had been to PNG many times over the past twenty years she had heard much from me about the church and country. I knew that this would not have given her a true picture of what she was to experience when she ministered to and fellowshipped with 800 hundred Holy Ghost filled saints in that country. It was beyond explanation. The people’s spontaneous, heart felt response to the preaching is quite an experience.

Some of the highlights were:

  • The welcome with song, dance and leis by the sisters
  • Warm fellowship with Bro. & Sis. Gration who were so kind in their care
  • Meeting at the Four Mile Church, the site of the newly erected Bible School
  • 11 ladies filled with the Holy Ghost
  • 4 baptised
  • Many healings

Sis. Sinikadi had done a wonderful job in arranging and running the conference. Sister Jacobsen and Sister Shields were greatly affected by the love of the sisters, their fervency in worship and responsiveness to the Word.

After this conference, Sis. Jacobsen joined me in Port Moresby where she again ministered at a conference for the Port Moresby District Ladies.

I had taught a four day seminar on the gifts of the Spirit. This seminar was attended by 300-400 at each session and resulted in a number being used in prophecy, tongues and interpretation of tongues. The Spirit had been moving in their midst but there had been a lack of perception as to what God was wanting to do in times of great anointing.

The Port Moresby District, comprising 15 churches, then held their Annual District Conference the highlights being:

  • A life moving anointing of the Holy Ghost
  • 4 Spirit filled
  • 11 baptised

Brother John Ulka the Home Missions Director and District Presbyter did a splendid job organizing the venues at June Valley Church and Nine Mile Church.

Bro. & Sis. Carver’s pervasive influence on this revival church was evident with a strong foundation of truth, organization and evangelism. The recent construction of the Bible school building with Bro. & Sis. Gration teaching will greatly strengthen that foundation and help the United Pentecostal Assemblies of Papua New Guinea reach its God appointed potential.
