Headquarters Office
Our recently-renovated Headquarters Office, which was robbed over the weekend

HQ Office Break-in

Uploaded 23 October 2007

22 October 2007

Make sure you read to the end of the story... it starts with bad but finishes with good news!

On Friday morning, Sis Bennie our office Secretary, called me to very regretfully inform me that the Headquarters Office had been broken into the night before. Our security guard, Bro Koko, had gone to a mid-week service, leaving his family in the small security house out the back. No one was expecting a robbery that early in the evening.

It was also raining heavily, a prime time for thievery. The noise of the tropical rain on the tin roof masks any noise made by robbers.

Two men jumped the gate, one armed with a bush-knife (machete) and bolt-cutters, cut the razor wire and padlock off the gate. They then proceeded to the Headquarters Office door, broke it open, and stole our laser printer, fax machine, networking equipment, petty cash tin and chequebooks, and made off with the loot into the night.

My heart fell as Sister Bennie told me this; I could tell she was very disheartened. The printer is their only means of producing Bible School notes, and communicating with the ministry around the country, and to lose this equipment was very discouraging. It is difficult and expensive to find replacement equipment in Papua New Guinea.

Being familiar with the tactics of this common event in PNG, Bro Koko fully expected them to come back and try again for the rest of the computer equipment. And sure enough they did. On Sunday night the two thieves broke in once again. This time, one went downstairs to the Office, and the other upstairs to the Missionary Residence. But Bros Koko and Clement were waiting in the dark. Bro Clement starled the one breaking into the Office, chased him down the street, and apprehended him. Bro Koko risked serious injury to himself by tackling the thief in possession of the bush-knife, but was able to subdue him.

They were detained by Bro Koko until the police arrived. After questioning, it was revealed that the thieves intended to sell the equipment at the local market, but had not yet done so. The equipment was still at their house, waiting for market day. Sis Bennie has confirmed with me today that all the equipment has been recovered. Praise God!

This incident does highlight some of the problems we face in Papua New Guinea. We will be living above the Headquarters Office, and must be vigilant for our safety and for the kids'. In this respect, we highly value your prayers for God's guidance and hand of safety upon us as we labour for Him.
