| Sis Pai from Fiji speaks to the Ladies |
National Ladies Conference 2008
Uploaded: 5 Dec 2008
We were so privileged to have Bro & Sis Paitadra from Fiji as the Guest Speakers for our National Ladies Conference. This was a historic joint-venture between Fiji and Papua New Guinea, and we are looking forward to more cooperation between our two countries in the future.
The Pais are old friends from our years in Fiji. Sis Carver reports on the Ladies Conference
National Ladies Conference 2008:
Our bi-annual Ladies Conference was held in the capital city Port Moresby. It is not often that the conference is located here as there is no road access to the city from the rest of the country. However this did not deter many ladies who spent many months raising their boat and airfares to come to the Conference. Each region sent a good number, even from as far afield as New Britain (islands off the mainland) and the remote areas of the Southern Highlands. For many women it was their first flight on a plane! They arrived in the city with their mattresses and a few belongings, and were accommodated in one of the local churches. Those women that arrived early for the conference did a great job of open air singing and preaching in the various suburbs of the city.
Our guest speaker was Sister Teresia Paitadra from Fiji. She was accompanied by her husband who came to speak to the men in the Port Moresby area. We have known Bro and Sis Paitradra for many years, having worked closely with them during our years in the Fiji Islands. From their many years of experience in the Headquarters office, Bible College and the church in Fiji, we knew they would make very suitable speakers.
The Ladies Conference was held in a large tent in the grounds of one of our churches in Port Moresby. On the first night over 700 women gathered in the tent for a wonderful opening service. By Saturday the crowd swelled to about 1000. The ladies sang and worshipped, danced and prayed. Many good Bible based dramas were enacted by various regions, as well as lovely choirs and special items. While the ladies gathered in the tent, the men from local churches met in Erima church where Bro Pai ministered and taught powerfully. Bro Carver was the translator for Bro Pai and it reminded us of the many years where the two men worked together; only then it was the other way around: Bro Pai was the translator for Bro Carver!

On Sunday morning Brother Paitadra was the main speaker for the Ladies Conference and he preached a powerful message on "Partnership". This was great teaching and direction for the church. Both men and women joined this meeting. There was not enough room in the tent, so people gathered under trees and in the shade of a smaller tent. Many sat in the hot sun. We joined the Paitadras in singing a hymn in Fijian, "A noda I drodro ko Jisu", or in English, "A shelter in the time of storm". This bought back many great memories for us.
Intense altar calls followed each service with the ladies reaching out to the Lord for their many needs and situations. Many women face poverty, early widowhood or deserted wives; they are victims of polygamy (PNG law allows multiple wives), domestic violence, illiteracy and sickness. Truly they have many needs and it was here during the preaching of the Word and at altar services they were able to place them before God and expect answers.
On Sunday evening we were blessed with an unusually cool breeze blowing for a tropical city. Many more special items were presented and we were blessed with songs in their local languages as well as one special choir item written for Sister Carver called "I’ve got Jesus on my side." Sister Carver then spoke on "Dealing with discouragement". The evening was concluded with Sister Paitadra speaking on the fitting subject of unity. We left the conference refreshed and encouraged, along with hundreds of precious ladies of Papua New Guinea.
