What is Thanksgiving Day?

Thanksgiving Day is an Offering Day for the church in Papua New Guinea. It occurs during July 2010, amongst all the local assemblies throughout the entire nation of PNG; and is a day when each member will give an offering in thankfulness to God, to be directed toward the evangelisation of Papua New Guinea and its nearby neighbour nations.

Background

For many years, the church has depended solely on financial support from overseas to accomplish its plans and goals. Starting last year, however, the church in Papua New Guinea has embarked on a new path. On "PNG Thanksgiving Day", every member in Papua New Guinea will come together to give on this nation-wide offering day; adults, young people, children and the elderly. The Thanksgiving offering will then be used to fund evangelism, training and assist the development of the Bible School complex. There is much excitement among the church membership about Thanksgiving Day. They feel honoured to support the work of the church, and a sense of responsibility toward their country, church and world.

Last year, the church raised over K78,000 (about US$35,000) during the Thanksgiving Offering. This year, we are targeting the K100,000 mark. This money will be used to grow the Bible School from its current infant stage to a full-sized, fully-equiped Bible School that is capable of training our large ministry along with hundreds of other students who desire to come to Bible School.

The Biggest Need of all

Without doubt the biggest need is the Bible School, and the PNG General Board has made this the primary goal of the Organisation. Currently, the Bible School is still in its infant stage, and in no way able to handle the large challenge that Papua New Guinea presents. Bible School is the one thing that will bring blessing and revival to all parts of PNG. Our task is to build residences for both students, teachers and missionaries, which we have already begun.

Invitation

We would like to invite you to join with the precious saints of Papua New Guinea in July as they give in one accord to help the church in PNG go ahead. This offering will mainly be directed toward the development of the Bible School, with a portion directed to the Mission Department to assist in our evangelisation efforts.

The church in PNG has taken the burden of the work in their country into their own hearts and minds, and have already started to give. But with 95% of the population not in paid employment, and 85% earning less than US$2 per day, PNG needs your help in reaching their goals and visions for the Bible School and Church.

The Construction Work is well underway for the Bible School Development - and this is only Stage 1! Everyone was overjoyed to see this project come to fruitition... the first time that PNG was undertaken such a goal. And it is made possible because of National Thanksgiving Day and the many PNG-loving supporters around the world. Even the little children worked hard to find their K10 to give during the Thanksgiving Offering!
