Construction of the Print Room
September, 2011
Uploaded: 21 December 2011
Story by Richard Carver (Jnr)
One of the most frustrating aspects of working at the Headquarters Office in PNG is the lack of space. We have five desks squeezed into an area suitable for maybe three, including a mini-bookstore. Inevitably this means that there is some things that are relegated to the storeroom because of lack of space.
One of the things that suffered because of this is the printing equipment. We have a fair amount of equipment which has the potential to achieve so much, which has been sitting idle, crammed into nooks and crannies. Just to put it into use meant half a day's work in setting it up (that's after you had forcibly removed all the other staff from their desks to make benchspace).
With the imminent arrival of Bro & Sis Pai, our General Superintendent (my father Richard S. Carver) decided it was time to make a change. We had gained a bit of storage space at our Bible School, which allowed us to make better use of the storeroom at the side of the HQ. It was a dark, dusty place, filled with old files and papers; which, because it was unsealed around the ceiling, meant that try as you might, you could never win the battle against the all-pervading PNG dust.

We got to work; myself, my father, Bro Jack and Bro Koko. After clearing the room out, we filled in the dust-prone areas, lined the ceiling and front wall, painted, put down carpet tiles, and got it looking super-nice. Next we moved in the printing equipment, organised the shelving and benchtops, and got it all set up ready to go.
The room is now so cosy that I am very tempted to give my office to someone else, and move into the print room! And most exciting of all, there is actually space for me to do computer repairs there! It used to be that any equipment repairs would be brought up to the dining room table, which Andrea used to hate (with a capital H), simply because there was nowhere else to repair them. Well, now that problem is solved, and everyone is much happier for it! Above all, we look forward to putting the printing equipment to good use!
The last bit of good news is that I have completed a toolroom under the house, which finally allows me to have a set-up area for my tools. These used to be relegated to the dusty storeroom as well, but now these too are brought out into the light of day! So in conclusion, I am a very happy man!
