Bible School Teacher Training
October, 2011
Uploaded: 21 December 2011
Story by Richard Carver (Jnr)
One of the initiatives begun by our Bible School Curriculm Coordinator (my mother) at the end of this year was Teacher Training for the Bible School.
We have long wanted to get the Bible School running to its full extent, which was meant to happen in 2010, and again in 2011, but for certain reasons never did. This was unfortunate, because we are all acutely aware that this is PNG's number one priority need. With the arrival of the Paitadra family, this provided the manpower needed to achieve this important goal.
One of the goals of the Bible School is to bring training out to the regional areas of PNG, as well as running the full-time course in Goroka. We have never had the manpower to do so, as the Bible School has only been taught by a few, and when they have been away or unable, the work of the Bible School ceases. Many visitors to PNG have been surprised that a church the age of the PNG church is still so behind in this area.
The main purpose of Bro Pai's arrival was to fill this need, and to get the Bible School running properly. He has had many years of experience in Fiji teaching in the Bible School, and it is his greatest love.
Upon his arrival, Sis Carver sat down with him and discussed the need for Teacher Training. No longer can such a big work be dependent on one or two; the way ahead for PNG was to start to develop a group of teachers which can join with the missionaries to become the teaching force in PNG. Also, these same teachers can take the Bible School to the regions, conducting short courses in isolated areas and needy centres such as Port Moresby.
So in October, we held a three day training course for a group of selected teachers, ones who have the ability in English and academically, to become a group of core and backup teachers for the Bible School. Bro Pai and myself taught them some basic teaching methods and subjects, and it was exciting to see the positive response. The teachers are now looking forward to 2012, when we will start to put them to work in both full-time and short courses.
This Bible School Teachers Training, along with the National Youth Leaders Training, breaks new ground for the church here. It is thrilling to see the church rising to new levels of maturity, even just in the last few months of 2011, and this marks a new and exciting stage in our history. Please continue to pray for strength to keep up the good work!
